Gentle Monster

Founded
2011
Founder
Hankook Kim
Gentle Monster was founded in 2011 in Seoul by Hankook Kim, a former marketing executive who launched the brand as a design-led contemporary eyewear label aimed at the gap between mass-market fashion eyewear and luxury-house frames. The brand's foundational thesis was specific: produce architectural, deliberately exaggerated frame shapes — oversized cat-eye, chunky aviator, geometric rimless — at a $200-$400 price tier, paired with elaborate experiential retail spaces designed by the in-house Gentle Monster studio. The Gentle Monster vocabulary settled around several specific frame shapes: the Her (an oversized round acetate frame that became the brand's defining product), the My Ma (a geometric rectangle), the Solo (a chunky aviator), and the South Side (a rimless), all of which ship in saturated colour acetate combinations. The brand's retail-as-installation programme — anchored to the Gentle Monster Haus space in Seoul (Bukchon, Gangnam), Beijing, Shanghai, Hong Kong, Tokyo, Singapore, London, New York, Los Angeles — has been a defining example of how a contemporary brand can build experiential retail at a luxury-attention scale. The brand is owned by IICombined, the Seoul-based parent company that also operates the makeup-and-cosmetics brand Tamburins and the dessert café Nudake. Gentle Monster operates approximately 40 standalone Haus stores globally plus extensive wholesale through major Asian and European luxury department stores. The brand has done collaborations with Maison Margiela, Mugler, Alessandro Michele's Gucci, Fenty by Rihanna, BTS, and Jennie of BLACKPINK. Few Korean luxury brands of the post-2010 generation have built such a globally legible retail-experiential vocabulary.
