Jil Sander was founded in 1968 in Hamburg by Heidemarie Jiline Sander (known professionally as Jil Sander), who had worked as a fashion editor at McCall's and Constanze before opening her own boutique. The brand's foundational thesis was singular and immediately legible: reduce ready-to-wear womenswear to its essential architectural lines, in the highest-grade Italian and German fabrics, with a colour palette that ran from black to bone to grey to taupe to white. By the late 1980s the brand had become the European reference for minimalist luxury, alongside Helmut Lang. The Jil Sander house has had an unusually turbulent creative-director history. Sander herself led the house through 1968-2000, then again 2003-2004 and 2012-2013. Raf Simons led 2005-2012, in a tenure now widely regarded as one of the most influential minimalist menswear-into-womenswear periods of the 2000s. Rodolfo Paglialunga held 2014-2016, Lucie and Luke Meier (the husband-wife creative-director duo) held 2017-2024, and Simone Bellotti was named creative director in 2024. Jil Sander is owned by OTB Group (Renzo Rosso's holding company that also owns Maison Margiela, Marni, Diesel, and Viktor & Rolf) since 2021. The brand operates flagships in Milan (Via Montenapoleone), Paris (Avenue Montaigne), London (Burlington Arcade, Sloane Street), New York (Madison Avenue), Tokyo (Aoyama, Ginza), plus around 70 global doors. Few European houses have remained so consistently legible across so many creative-director transitions.
