Junya Watanabe joined Comme des Garçons in 1984 as a patternmaker fresh out of Bunka Fashion College, became chief designer for the Tricot CdG line in 1987, and in 1992 was given his own runway slot within the COMME federation under Rei Kawakubo. The brief was essentially unbounded: take Kawakubo's avant-garde grammar and push it through your own concerns. What Watanabe did with that freedom became one of the great laboratory practices of 21st-century fashion. He treated technical fabrics — Gore-Tex, neoprene, parachute nylon — as couture materials. He made geometric pattern-cutting and elaborate marquetry-style fabric piecing into a brand signature. The Junya Watanabe MAN line (founded 2002) has been the venue for some of the most lyrical collaborations in fashion: Levi's reconstructed denim, The North Face technical outerwear, Karrimor backpacks, Carhartt workwear, and dozens more — each one filtered through Watanabe's strict editorial gaze. Unusually for someone with that level of creative capital, Watanabe has chosen to stay inside the COMME structure rather than spinning out an independent house. The constraint has clearly been generative. Few designers active today have built such a rigorous, self-consistent body of work over thirty years.

How to buy from China

Ships to mainland China

Junya Watanabe has no consumer e-commerce of its own, so China shoppers buy through Farfetch or SSENSE, both of which ship to mainland China with duties included.

Shop Secondhand

Archive and rare Junya Watanabe pieces mostly circulate on the resale market. Japanese sites don't ship to China — buy via a proxy like Buyee; most Western sites ship internationally or are reachable with a US/EU forwarder.
