Lakai Limited Footwear was founded in 1999 in Los Angeles by Mike Carroll, Rick Howard, and Megan Baltimore as a deliberately skate-anchored footwear brand built around the team riders of the Girl Skateboards and Chocolate Skateboards companies (which Carroll and Howard had co-founded earlier in the 1990s with Spike Jonze and Andy Jenkins). The brand's foundational thesis was specific: produce skate-shoes by skaters, for skaters, with the construction details (heel-cup construction, rubber-toe-cap reinforcement, gum-rubber outsole, cupsole-and-vulcanized variants) anchored to the specific technical needs of professional street skateboarding. The Lakai vocabulary settled around several specific shoe models: the iconic Marc Howard Cambridge (an early-2000s low-top vulcanized that became the brand's defining product), the Manchester (a cupsole low-top), the Carroll (a Cambridge variant), the Daly (a cupsole), and various team-pro signature models for Mike Carroll, Rick Howard, Mike Mo Capaldi, Stevie Williams, JB Gillet, and dozens of other team-riders. The brand has done long-running collaborations with Workaholics, Diamond Supply Co., HUF, Stüssy, and the broader skate-specialty-retailer network. The brand is owned by Crailtap (the Los Angeles-based skate-industry parent company that also operates Girl Skateboards, Chocolate Skateboards, Fourstar, and Royal Trucks). Lakai operates flagship retail through the Crailtap retail network and distributes through skate-specialty retailers globally including Supreme stores, the broader skate distribution network in Europe, Asia, North America, and Australia, plus the major footwear specialty retailers. Few skate-shoe brands of the post-1995 generation have remained so disciplined around the 'by-skaters-for-skaters' technical specification while building a culturally significant brand vocabulary.
