Liberal Youth Ministry
Liberal Youth Ministry was founded in 2017 in Mexico City by Erik Bernal Jr., a Mexican-American designer who launched the brand as a Mexico City-anchored menswear label specifically focused on what he described as 'the cultural conversation between 1990s Mexico City punk culture, traditional Mexican textile craft, and contemporary global luxury fashion.' The brand's foundational thesis was specific: produce a Mexican-anchored menswear vocabulary at the intersection of Latin American craft tradition, post-punk visual culture, and the post-2010 luxury-streetwear conversation.
The Liberal Youth Ministry vocabulary settled around several recurring elements: hand-printed silk shirts referencing traditional Mexican textile motifs (the brand's recurring use of Mexican folk-art floral prints and embroidered iconography), deliberately deconstructed leather and wool tailoring, deliberately-distressed denim with hand-embroidered references to Mexico City street culture, and a colour palette anchored to saturated red, yellow, royal blue (Mexican flag colour references) plus muted black, ecru, and washed-charcoal. The brand has presented at Paris Men's Fashion Week each season since 2019.
The brand is independent and held by Bernal. Liberal Youth Ministry operates a flagship retail concept in Mexico City (Roma Norte) plus international wholesale through SSENSE, MR PORTER, MATCHES, Dover Street Market, Antonioli, GR8, and a small set of carefully chosen Latin-American-aesthetic-focused luxury specialty retailers globally. The brand has been one of the more culturally specific examples of how a Mexican-anchored menswear brand can build a coherent post-punk-meets-Latin-craft vocabulary while remaining integrated into the European luxury menswear conversation.
