MADNESS

MADNESS was founded in 2014 in Hong Kong by Hong Kong actor Shawn Yue (姚乐添 / Yu Wenle), as a streetwear brand specifically built around what Yue described as 'the visual culture of late-1990s Hong Kong cinema-and-music youth subculture.' Yue is one of the most-recognised Hong Kong-Cantopop-era actors of the 2000s and had been a streetwear collector since the late 1990s, with the brand emerging from his personal aesthetic anchored to early-2000s Bape, Stüssy, Neighborhood, and the original Hong Kong-Tokyo streetwear network. The MADNESS vocabulary settled around several recurring elements: heavyweight cotton tees and hoodies with the brand's iconic 'MADNESS' typographic logo, varsity-jacket-and-coach-jacket layered streetwear with deliberately Hong Kong-cinema-iconography graphics, deconstructed denim, the brand's continuous run of MADNESS × Nike, MADNESS × adidas, MADNESS × Casio G-Shock, MADNESS × Le Coq Sportif, and MADNESS × Stüssy collaborations, and a colour palette anchored to washed-black, washed-navy, ecru, oxblood, and the brand's recurring use of saturated red and yellow with Hong Kong-flag-derived colour combinations. The brand is independent and held by Yue. MADNESS operates flagship retail in Hong Kong (Causeway Bay, the brand's home neighbourhood), Beijing, Shanghai (Anfu Road), Taipei, Tokyo (Shibuya Parco), plus international wholesale through HBX, JUICE Hong Kong, Dover Street Market, Patta, and a small set of carefully chosen streetwear specialty retailers globally. The brand has been one of the more culturally specific Hong Kong-Cantonese streetwear brands of the post-2010 generation, with the late-1990s-Hong-Kong-cinema-iconography specifically anchoring the brand inside the Hong-Kong-Mainland-China-streetwear conversation that has been continuously rewritten since 2015.
