Magliano was founded in 2017 in Bologna by Italian designer Luca Magliano, a former student of Polimoda (Florence) who launched the brand as an Italian menswear ready-to-wear label specifically focused on what he described as 'a thesis of Italian-provincial-melancholy.' The brand's foundational proposition was specific: produce a menswear vocabulary anchored to the visual culture of the Italian provincial periphery — the Romagna countryside, the post-industrial Bolognese suburbs, the under-celebrated 'lower' Italian aesthetic of cheap-suits, drunk-uncles, and small-town wedding photography — rebuilt as luxury fashion. The Magliano vocabulary settled around several recurring elements: deliberately ill-fitted suit jackets with intentional shoulder-distortion and asymmetric lapel construction, washed-cotton workwear shirts referencing Italian-blue-collar uniforms, deconstructed denim, the brand's recurring use of saturated red-and-white-striped 'lambretta scooter' tablecloth-derived prints, and a colour palette anchored to washed-charcoal, ecru, oxblood, washed-pink, and the brand's recurring red-stripe. The brand won the LVMH Karl Lagerfeld Prize in 2023 and has presented at Milan Men's Fashion Week each season since 2019. The brand is independent and held by Magliano. The label operates with no permanent retail of its own, distributing through SSENSE, MR PORTER, MATCHES, Antonioli, Dover Street Market, GR8, Beams in Tokyo, and a small set of carefully chosen luxury menswear specialty retailers globally. The brand has been one of the more conceptually rigorous Italian menswear debuts of the post-2015 generation, with the 'provincial-melancholy' thesis specifically anchoring the brand inside the contemporary 'Italian-everyday-aesthetic-as-luxury' conversation that has been rewritten in Milan menswear since 2020.
