Maoji Studio (毛吉 / 毛织) was founded in 2019 in Shanghai by Chinese designer Yiming Mao as a contemporary luxury knitwear brand specifically focused on what Mao described as 'a deliberately-Chinese-knit-craft anchored contemporary-luxury vocabulary anchored to traditional Chinese hand-knit craft and contemporary architectural-tailoring proportions.' The brand has been one of the defining post-2019 Shanghai-anchored 'Chinese-knit-craft-revival' brands.
The Maoji Studio vocabulary settled around several recurring elements: hand-knitted Chinese-cashmere and Italian-mill wool sweaters and cardigans (the brand's defining product category since 2019 — the iconic Maoji Studio Cable Cardigan and Maoji Studio Ribbed Sweater have been the brand's anchoring products), deconstructed Chinese-silk-and-cotton dresses with deliberately-architectural feminine construction, hand-knitted knit-and-mesh top variants with deliberately-Chinese-craft-tradition references, deliberately-architectural cotton-and-linen tailored separates, and a colour palette anchored to washed-cream, oxblood, ecru, washed-charcoal, soft-pink, washed-navy, plus the brand's recurring use of traditional-Chinese-aesthetic colour combinations.
The brand is independent and held by Mao. Maoji Studio operates flagship retail in Shanghai (Anfu Road — the brand's home neighbourhood) plus international wholesale through SSENSE, MATCHES, Lane Crawford, the Boontheshop network in Seoul, and a curated set of contemporary-luxury-knitwear specialty retailers globally. The brand has been one of the more quietly disciplined post-2019 Shanghai-anchored 'Chinese-knit-craft-revival' brands.
