Mukzin (密扇) was founded in 2014 in Shanghai by Chinese designer Han Wen and her co-founder as a contemporary luxury womenswear brand specifically focused on what the founders described as 'a deliberately-Chinese-cultural-archive-anchored contemporary-luxury-feminine vocabulary anchored to traditional Chinese-textile-and-folk-craft references.' The brand has been one of the defining post-2014 Shanghai-anchored 'Chinese-cultural-archive-luxury-womenswear' brands. The Mukzin vocabulary settled around several recurring elements: hand-printed silk and cotton dresses with deliberately-traditional-Chinese-folk-art-and-cultural-archive motif references (the brand has been continuously focused on Chinese-cultural-archive references including Dunhuang Buddhist-cave-painting, Beijing-opera-aesthetic, and broader Chinese-cultural-and-folk-art references), hand-embroidered Italian-mill wool tailored separates with deliberately-Chinese-craft detail, deliberately-architectural cotton-and-linen ready-to-wear, and a colour palette anchored to deeply-saturated red (the brand's defining Chinese-aesthetic colour), washed-cream, oxblood, ecru, washed-charcoal, plus the brand's recurring use of saturated royal-blue, marigold-yellow, and the iconic traditional-Chinese-cultural-aesthetic colour combinations. The brand has presented at Shanghai Fashion Week each season since 2015. The brand is independent and held by Han Wen. Mukzin operates flagship retail in Shanghai (Anfu Road — the brand's home flagship), Beijing (Sanlitun), Chengdu, Hong Kong, plus international wholesale through SSENSE, MATCHES, Lane Crawford, the Boontheshop network in Seoul, Net-a-Porter, the Webster, and a curated set of contemporary-luxury-womenswear specialty retailers globally. The brand has been one of the defining post-2014 Shanghai-anchored 'Chinese-cultural-archive-luxury-womenswear' brands.
