Particle Fever was founded in 2015 in Shanghai by Chinese-American designer Pearl Lam Wang (王宁宁), a former Wall Street financier who relocated to Shanghai to launch the brand as a contemporary Chinese-anchored athleisure-and-sportswear brand specifically focused on what Wang described as 'science-and-physics-anchored athleisure design.' The brand's foundational thesis was specific: produce technically-engineered athleisure with deliberate-scientific-conceptual graphic-design references (particle physics motifs, quantum-mechanics typography, mathematical-equation graphics) at the contemporary luxury price tier. The Particle Fever vocabulary settled around several recurring elements: technical-fabric leggings, sports bras, and athletic tops with the brand's recurring scientific-and-physics graphic motifs, the iconic Particle Fever sports-jacket and technical-shell outerwear, deliberately-architectural athletic silhouettes with hardware-anchored detail, and a colour palette anchored to washed-black, technical-grey, oxblood, soft-pink, and the brand's recurring use of electric-blue and saturated yellow. The brand has been a continuous presence at Shanghai Fashion Week each season since 2017 and has presented international capsule collections at NY-Fashion-Week pop-ups. The brand is independent and held by Wang. Particle Fever operates flagship retail in Shanghai (Anfu Road, the brand's home neighbourhood; the Xintiandi store), Beijing (Sanlitun), Chengdu, Shenzhen, plus international wholesale through SSENSE, Lane Crawford, Boontheshop, Net-a-Porter, and a small set of carefully chosen luxury athleisure specialty retailers globally. The brand has been one of the defining post-2015 Chinese-anchored contemporary athleisure brands, with the deliberately-scientific brand positioning specifically anchoring the brand inside the broader 'Chinese-luxury-athleisure-export' conversation that has emerged since 2020.
