Pleasures was founded in 2015 in Los Angeles by Alex James and Vlad Elkin, two former graphic-design and music-industry creatives who had been operating in the LA post-punk-and-noise music scene through the early 2010s. The brand's foundational thesis was specific: produce a streetwear vocabulary that drew explicitly on post-punk, industrial, and goth-rock visual culture (Joy Division, Bauhaus, Nine Inch Nails, Crass, the broader 1980s European-and-American underground music scene), rebuilt for the contemporary streetwear-collector audience. The Pleasures vocabulary settled around several recurring elements: heavyweight cotton tees and hoodies with the brand's iconic post-punk-record-cover graphic prints, deliberately-tortured typography referencing 1980s industrial-music album artwork, the long-running Pleasures × Joy Division, Pleasures × New Order, Pleasures × Nine Inch Nails, and Pleasures × Smashing Pumpkins music-licensed-graphic collaboration capsules, and a colour palette anchored to washed-black, oxblood, washed-charcoal, ecru, and the brand's recurring use of saturated red and acid-yellow. The brand has done long-running collaborations with Reebok, ASICS, Smashing Pumpkins, Sonic Youth, and the major post-punk-music-licensed brand portfolio. The brand is independent and held by James and Elkin. Pleasures operates a flagship retail in Los Angeles (Fairfax Avenue), plus international wholesale through SSENSE, HBX, Dover Street Market, GR8, Patta, the broader US-and-European streetwear specialty distribution, and a substantial e-commerce platform. The brand has been one of the defining post-2015 LA-anchored 'music-licensed-streetwear' brands, with the post-punk-iconography-anchored proposition specifically anchoring the brand inside the contemporary 'music-streetwear-crossover' conversation that has been continuously rewritten since 2018.
