Sandy Liang
Sandy Liang was founded in 2014 in New York by Sandy Liang, a Chinese-American designer who graduated from Parsons in 2013. The label started with a series of fleece-lined chore jackets pieced from textile remnants she found in her family's Chinatown apartment and at a Manhattan sample sale; the jackets sold out among the New York fashion editor community almost instantly and remained the brand's defining product for several years.
The Sandy Liang vocabulary has evolved into one of the clearest articulations of the post-2020 'girlcore' / coquette movement: bows, ruffles, school-uniform tropes, fleece pieces and reworked vintage uniforms, the Pointe ballet flat, and a sensibility that pairs nostalgia for Chinese-American childhood with a Manhattan downtown sharpness. Lana Del Rey, Bella Hadid, and Olivia Rodrigo have all worn the brand; the bow-tied Pointe flat became one of the most-resold accessories of 2024.
The brand operates a single flagship on Suffolk Street in New York's Lower East Side — adjacent to the family neighbourhood where Liang grew up — and sells direct online plus through Dover Street Market, SSENSE, and a small set of high-end retailers. The brand remains independent with Liang as sole creative director. Few American designers have built such a recognisable visual world in such a short time, almost entirely on the strength of consistent personal taste.
