Sankuanz Studio
Sankuanz Studio is the experimental and creative-direction wing of Sankuanz, the Chinese designer label founded in 2013 by Shangguan Zhe (上官喆) that emerged from Xiamen's underground fashion scene before moving to Shanghai and Paris, where it built one of the defining post-2010 Chinese-designer trajectories through Paris Fashion Week presentations, LVMH Prize semi-finalist status, and a vocabulary that combined Chinese folk-religion iconography with aggressive contemporary streetwear cuts.
The Sankuanz vocabulary—heavyweight cotton hoodies overprinted with Daoist talisman graphics, paneled work jackets cut from Chinese military-surplus fabrics, denim deconstructed and reassembled with visible repair stitching, and a recurring cast of Chinese folk-deity and ghost-festival imagery executed in screenprint and embroidery—pushed the conceptual end of Chinese streetwear past where contemporaries like Roaringwild and Beaster were willing to go. The Studio sub-channel within the broader Sankuanz operation handles the runway-only pieces, the artist collaborations, the small-batch experimental projects, and the gallery-context installation work that Shangguan Zhe has used to position the brand inside the contemporary-art-adjacent end of Chinese fashion.
Sankuanz's broader market position got built through Paris Fashion Week appearances, Dover Street Market London and Paris pickup, Bergdorf Goodman's contemporary floor, and SSENSE's curated edge during the late 2010s. The Studio program in particular has anchored the brand's collaborations with Chinese contemporary artists like Liu Wei, Yang Fudong, and Cao Fei, plus the brand's ongoing relationship with Shanghai's Power Station of Art and Beijing's UCCA contemporary art center. By the early 2020s, Sankuanz had become one of the defining Chinese designer labels of its generation, with the Studio sub-channel functioning as the more experimentally forward-pointing edge of a broader brand operation that also runs commercial seasonal collections through more conventional retail channels.
