Xander Zhou (周翔宇) was founded in 2007 in Beijing by Chinese designer Xander Zhou after his Royal College of Art MA graduation. The brand was conceived from the outset as a deliberately Chinese-anchored avant-garde menswear label aimed at the international fashion-week calendar — Zhou became one of the first Mainland Chinese menswear designers to consistently show on the London Men's Fashion Week schedule, doing so from 2014 onward.
The Xander Zhou vocabulary settled around several recurring elements: deliberately architectural single-breasted blazers and trench coats with exaggerated proportions, hand-printed silk shirts referencing speculative-fiction and Sino-futurist visual motifs (the brand's seasonal shows have been built around themes like alien anatomy, parallel-universe Chinese mythology, and post-human bodies), deconstructed denim and technical-fabric outerwear, and a colour palette anchored to washed-black, oxblood, washed-charcoal, ecru, plus the brand's recurring use of saturated red, electric-blue, and milk-pink. The 2018 spring collection — featuring 'pregnant' male models on the runway — became one of the most-discussed cultural moments of Chinese menswear that decade.
The brand is independent and held by Zhou. Xander Zhou operates with no permanent retail of its own, distributing through SSENSE, MATCHES, Dover Street Market, GR8, Lane Crawford, Boontheshop, the broader Chinese department-store network including Joyce Hong Kong and the I.T Group flagships, and a small set of carefully chosen luxury menswear specialty retailers globally. The brand has been one of the most internationally legible Mainland Chinese menswear designers of the post-2010 generation, with the deliberately speculative-narrative show framework positioning it inside the broader London-and-Paris menswear conversation that has been continuously rewritten since 2014.
