Yuhan Wang
Yuhan Wang was founded in 2018 in London by Chinese-British designer Yuhan Wang after her Central Saint Martins MA graduation. The brand was conceived from the outset as a deliberately-romantic, deliberately-feminine contemporary womenswear label specifically focused on what Wang described as 'the visual culture of 1920s-1940s Chinese cinema, 19th-century European Romanticism, and contemporary East-Asian feminine sensibility.' The brand has been one of the defining post-2018 London-anchored Chinese-heritage womenswear brands. The Yuhan Wang vocabulary settled around several recurring elements: hand-printed silk-and-cotton dresses with deliberately-romantic floral and lace-pattern motifs referencing 1930s Shanghai-jazz-club textile traditions, deconstructed knitted-lace separates with hand-finished decorative detail, soft-shouldered single-breasted blazers with deliberately-feminine ruffle-and-bow construction, and a colour palette anchored to washed-cream, oxblood, washed-pink, soft-yellow, pearl-white, ecru, plus the brand's recurring use of saturated red, royal-blue, and traditional-Chinese-aesthetic colour combinations. The brand has presented at London Fashion Week each season since 2019 and was awarded the BFC NewGen designer prize. The brand is independent and held by Wang. Yuhan Wang operates with no permanent retail of its own, distributing through SSENSE, MATCHES, Net-a-Porter, Mytheresa, Dover Street Market, Lane Crawford, the Boontheshop network in Seoul, the Webster, and a curated set of contemporary-luxury-womenswear specialty retailers globally. The brand has been one of the most culturally specific post-2018 Chinese-heritage London-anchored debuts, with the deliberately-1930s-Shanghai-and-European-Romantic positioning specifically anchoring the brand inside the contemporary 'cross-cultural-feminine-luxury' conversation that has been continuously rewritten since 2020.
