Hyein Seo

Hyein Seo was founded in 2014 in Seoul by Hyein Seo, a Royal Academy of Fine Arts Antwerp graduate who launched the brand immediately after her graduation. The brand's foundational thesis was specific: produce a womenswear vocabulary that drew on Korean youth-subculture aesthetics — schoolgirl uniforms, K-pop iconography, North Korean propaganda graphic design, Seoul nightlife — rebuilt through the deconstruction tradition of her Antwerp Six-derived training. The Hyein Seo vocabulary settled around several specific elements: deconstructed schoolgirl-uniform-derived pleated skirts and oxford shirts, North Korean propaganda-poster-style printed graphics on jersey and cotton, sharp-shouldered tailored jackets with deliberate hardware-and-strap accents, and a colour palette that runs from saturated red and yellow (Korean propaganda colours) to muted grey and black-and-white. The brand has been associated since the beginning with the K-pop crossover — Rihanna and Frank Ocean wore Hyein Seo pieces in 2015-2016 — and the brand became an early example of how Korean youth-aesthetics could integrate into the European luxury fashion conversation. The brand is independent and held by Hyein Seo. The label operates from Seoul with no permanent retail of its own, distributing through SSENSE, MATCHES, Dover Street Market, GR8, the Coexist Concept Store in Seoul, and a curated set of luxury department stores including Boontheshop, Lane Crawford, and the broader Asian fashion-specialty retail network. The brand presents on the Paris Womens calendar and has been one of the defining Korean designers of the post-2014 generation at the intersection of Korean youth-subculture and European luxury fashion vocabulary.
