JNBY (Just Naturally Be Yourself) was founded in 1994 in Hangzhou, China by Li Lin as one of China's first independent contemporary womenswear brands, launched at a time when the Chinese ready-to-wear industry was almost entirely focused on either state-enterprise manufacturing or foreign luxury imports. The brand's foundational thesis was specific: produce a contemporary Chinese womenswear vocabulary rooted in natural-fibre fabrics, deconstructed silhouettes, and a deliberately understated visual voice that drew on both contemporary European design and traditional Chinese aesthetic principles. The JNBY vocabulary settled around several recurring elements: deconstructed wool and linen tailoring, hand-printed silk and cotton dresses with subtle Chinese-aesthetic motifs, oversized layered jersey separates, the brand's recurring use of natural-dyed indigo and earth-tone fabrics, and a colour palette anchored to natural-cotton ecru, washed-charcoal, soft sage, and the brand's recurring deep navy. The brand has expanded into multiple sub-lines: JNBY for the main womenswear line, JNBY by JNBY for the diffusion menswear, jnby for kids, less is more for the high-end menswear, and Cuna Café for the lifestyle and food-and-beverage operation. JNBY Design is publicly listed on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange (HKEX: 3306) and is one of China's defining independent womenswear groups. The brand operates approximately 800 retail locations across Mainland China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Singapore, Japan, plus international locations in New York, Vancouver, and the Paris-flagship at 35 Rue de Grenelle (opened 2022). The brand has been one of the most successful examples of how a Chinese-domestic-anchored independent womenswear brand can build a substantial multi-line retail operation while remaining culturally legible inside the broader Asian contemporary-fashion conversation.
