Random Identities
Random Identities was founded in 2017 in Berlin by German designer Stefano Pilati, the former Yves Saint Laurent creative director (2004-2012) and former Ermenegildo Zegna design director, who launched the brand specifically focused on what Pilati described as 'a deliberately-anonymous unisex luxury vocabulary that resists conventional fashion-industry-narrative gendered marketing.' The brand's foundational thesis was specific: produce a contemporary luxury unisex ready-to-wear that drew explicitly on the post-1990s Pilati-era visual culture, rebuilt with deliberate-genderless-and-conceptual proportions.
The Random Identities vocabulary settled around several recurring elements: deliberately-androgynous-cut single-breasted blazers in Italian-mill wool, washed-cotton oxford shirts with deliberate-shoulder-distortion construction, deconstructed leather-and-technical-fabric outerwear, the brand's iconic flat-front trousers with deliberately exaggerated leg proportions, sheer-mesh-and-silk slip dresses and tops, and a colour palette anchored to washed-black, oxblood, ecru, washed-charcoal, soft-pink, and the brand's recurring use of natural-indigo and washed-cream tones. The brand presents at Paris Fashion Week and has been a consistent presence on the Paris menswear-and-womenswear unisex schedule since 2018.
The brand is independent and held by Pilati. Random Identities operates with no permanent retail of its own, distributing through SSENSE, MR PORTER, MATCHES, Net-a-Porter, Mytheresa, Lane Crawford, Boontheshop, Dover Street Market, and a curated set of luxury specialty retailers globally. The brand has been one of the more conceptually rigorous post-2015 Berlin-anchored luxury fashion debuts, with the deliberately-anonymous-genderless framework specifically anchoring the brand inside the contemporary 'post-gender-luxury-fashion' conversation that has been continuously rewritten in Paris menswear-and-womenswear since 2018.
