Jun Takahashi founded UNDERCOVER in 1989 with classmate NIGO (later of A Bathing Ape) while still a Bunka Fashion College student. The earliest collections were bootleg punk shirts sold from a Harajuku store called Nowhere; the label's first proper runway show was in Tokyo in 1994, with Takahashi pushing toward a vocabulary that fused British punk, dada-anarchic graphic experimentation, and a darkly romantic Japanese sensibility. UNDERCOVER reached Paris in 2002 with the much-discussed 'Scab' collection, and over the following two decades Takahashi built one of the most quietly consequential designer practices of his generation. Long collaborations with Nike (the original Gyakusou running line in 2010, the still-revered React Element 87 in 2018, multiple Daybreak / Project ATC pairings) have given streetwear some of its most coveted product. The brand also runs a kid's line, a homeware practice, and a parallel artistic output (Takahashi's We Make Noise, Not Clothes ethos, the 'GRACE' poetry-graphic seasons). UNDERCOVER remains independent. Takahashi designs every collection himself and continues to show in Paris. His relationship with NIGO and the broader Harajuku creative class that began in the late 1980s — Hiroshi Fujiwara, Tetsu Nishiyama, Jonio at NEIGHBORHOOD — has shaped probably more of contemporary streetwear than any other single creative network.
