Nike 的起点是 1964 年的 Blue Ribbon Sports——俄勒冈大学田径教练 Bill Bowerman 与他从前的队员 Phil Knight 合开的小型进口商,把 Onitsuka Tiger 跑鞋引入美国。两人有一个清晰的论点:为目的而设计的美式运动鞋,足以击败当时统治赛道的德国品牌。整整十年,他们在长跑训练与工作台前反复验证这一想法。1971 年,他们与 Onitsuka 决裂,以 35 美元从设计专业学生 Carolyn Davidson 手中买下 Swoosh 标志,并以希腊胜利女神之名重新命名公司:Nike。 此后产品节奏极快:1972 年的华夫底 Cortez、1979 年的气垫 Tailwind、1982 年的 Air Force 1,再到 1985 年围绕乔丹的营销转向——这一步几乎凭一己之力,发明了「球鞋即文化符号」的现代概念。九十年代,Nike 反超 Adidas 成为全球最大的运动品牌;进入 2020 年代,它又通过与 Off-White、Travis Scott、Sacai、Comme des Garçons 等数十位伙伴的长期合作,搭起了时尚圈最具枢纽性的联名平台之一。 Nike 的独到之处,在于它同时是一家严肃的性能公司(Vaporfly、ZoomX、Alphafly 长距离跑鞋),也是一台美学发动机(Dunk、Air Force 1、AJ1),整个文化都在反复引用它。少有品牌能在如此多次自我重塑之后,仍稳稳保留 Bowerman 最初对运动员的那份承诺。
